Since i am a journalist wannabe, i plan to put up some of my published work in the hope that people will actually read it, and perhaps even react to it.

Strawberry Fields Forever

Ah strawberries! They were the inspiration behind the famous Beatles track “Strawberry Fields Forever” and while some dim-witted puritans may put the song down by claiming that the song had some psychedelic undertones, it is a true classic.

Eating these heart shaped delights is nothing less than paradise and even prompted the writer, William Allen Butler to declare:

“Doubtless God could have made a better berry (than the strawberry), but doubtless God never did.”

And many would agree that he was right.

But while we can't go down to strawberry fields forever, let’s celebrate the strawberry season that is upon us and the scrumptious treats that come with it.

Many cakes served in restaurants contain strawberries. While the most conventional is undoubtedly the strawberry shortcake, strawberry cheesecake is also a firm favourite for many who argue that the strawberries are, quite literally, the icing on the cake. Of course, in order to work, the cheese has to be creamy and fresh, as do the strawberries.

Many cool drinks contain strawberries and are great to have during a long hot afternoon lunch or when meeting friends after work. Such cool delights include strawberry margaritas (virgin ones, of course!), with lime for flavour, served in salt-rimmed glasses. Strawberry juice and milkshakes are also refreshing.

But that's not where the fun ends with these red, ripe rhapsodies. Strawberry souffle is another delicious option that goes down well after a hearty meal, and so is fresh strawberry ice cream, or even strawberry sundaes topped with fresh strawberries.

While chocolate-topped strawberries are also a favourite, perhaps the ultimate strawberry dessert is a plate of luscious strawberries topped with fresh whipped cream.

So the next time you are dining out, remember, the strawberry season will soon end, so make sure you make the most of this ambrosial delicacy.
